In our world, characterized by overproduction and consumption, the value of things is often defined by their functionality and material significance. But what happens in other worlds? The art project "Societal Waste Collection" explores, in an ironic way, how value is constructed in an increasingly digital world—and what role remnants from the physical world can play in this process.
An insignificant waste object—symbolizing transience and worthlessness in our throwaway society—is placed in a new context. The object is first digitized using a 3D scanner and transformed into an animated GIF. This digital representation is then minted as an NFT (Non-Fungible Token), creating a new value system in an immaterial world. With a total of 99 individual NFTs priced at 1.995 Ethereum each (reflecting the original price of a toothbrush head—€1.99), the current digital purchase price per NFT is approximately $6,273.92.
A screen displays the animated NFT, providing the option to purchase the token via a QR code. Meanwhile, the original object is presented in its raw, physical form on a pedestal.
The project provocatively highlights the discrepancy between the physical and digital worlds: The real object appears as worthless trash but, through its digital representation in the NFT space, suddenly gains potential financial and symbolic value. This ironic contrast challenges viewers to question their own perception of value and its intersubjective reality.
